Hazelnut kernels: A dramatic race to catch up

The frantic catch-up race is hardly to be topped where drama is concerned.
Severe collapse of exports
Demand leaves a lot to be desired, even though Turkey has increased its exports significantly in the last few weeks, compared to the beginning of the season. The current figures show just how strongly exports have collapsed. While almost 55,000 mt were still exported in October of season 2015/16, barely 34,000 mt were sold abroad this year. Exporters are diligent, and sold an impressive 7,000 mt in the week before last. However, experts are figuring that a little more than 35,000 mt will have been exported by the end of October, at the most.

Farmers are asking unrealistic prices
Opinions vary widely, where the reasons and consequences of the present sales slump are concerned. According to some traders, the low product availability simply entails that less merchandise is provided for exports. They are counting on a price increase before the end of the year. Other dealers have serious doubts about these statements, though. The reason being that half of the raw hazelnut kernels are from crop 2015. Consequently, it is probable that the carry-overs amount to about 175,000 mt. This means that, combined with this year’s crop, there are 650,000 - 700,000 mt available on the market. This sizeable amount also put farmers under pressure. Although raw hazelnut prices have slightly increased, farmers can hardly enforce their price demands of 14-15 TRY/kg. Important impulses for further price development depend upon the main customer, Ferrero.
