The trade in Sugar may pick up the pace soon.

Sugar traders may not face a huge chaos or a problem after the registration under the new tax regime – GST.

A 5% of GST will be charged under sugar and only if the trader’s turnover is over INR 2’000’000 per year.

Wholesalers of sugar are trying to watch the market and still understanding before trading in huge quantities. As this has not yet created any sugar shortage in the domestic market yet. The small traders have already stocked up sugar before the GST was applied.

The production of sugar this year is expected to be around 21 million tons, down by 4 million tons in the year 2015-16. Whereas the annual demand of sugar in the country is around 24-24.5 million tons per year and there’s previous years imported stock available with the traders.
