Grains and Rapeseed: Production to drop by 10%

BERLIN. Drought has prompted the German Farmers’ Association to slash grain production estimates to as little as 41 million mt. This year’s production will again range well below average. Many farmers have even decided against harvesting their crops and to chop their grains instead. President Joachim Rukwied explains the situation.

 

Production is expected to fall by as much as 4.5 million mt short of last year’s below-average crop of 45.5 million mt – a drop of nearly 10%. The 5-year moving average is 47.9 million mt. The weather has turned out to be a great challenge in many parts of Germany. Spring started off cold, after the winter was wet. Contrary to this, weather in April weather was far too warm and dry and the sudden change had an adverse impact on many plants.
