BRUSSELS. Dry weather conditions have delayed sowing for wheat in Ukraine and in Russia. Demand for corn has surged in Spain. Much to the detriment of US suppliers China has turned to Brazil for soybeans. Eastern European rapeseed does not stand a chance against the attractive rates prevailing for canola in Canada.

Dry conditions delay wheat sowing

Rain has delayed the summer wheat harvest in Eastern Russia prompting concerns over the impact on quality and causing the market to firm. At the same time dry weather conditions are holding back the winter wheat sowing in Central Russia and in Eastern Ukraine, which may reduce the area. Farmers have only completed sowing on 8.3 million ha in Russia, which ranges more than 1 million ha below the five-year moving average. Official estimates predict a 4.5% decline in the area sown with wheat in Ukraine for next year’s crop. Sudde
