Flaxseed: massive correction of the cultivation estimates

OTTAWA/NUR-SULTAN. The Canadian statistics service StatCan published updated crop forecasts this week. Contrary to previous expectations, the flaxseed market might have to adjust to a significantly smaller crop.

Possible crop decline in Canada

StatCan's latest report projects that Canada's flaxseed acreage could be 982,000 acres this year, which would be about 397,400 ha, just 5-6% more than in 2020. Most recently, acreage estimates for the 2021/2022 season were 460,000 ha. This significantly reduces the production potential. Subtracting the potential difference from the area actually harvested, the crop would come to 560,000-600,000 mt with an average yield of 1.45-1.55 mt/ha.
