NUR-SULTAN/OTTAWA. While farmgate prices are largely stable in Kazakhstan, price adjustments are taking place on the spot market in Europe. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has, in addition, issued revised estimates.

Prices climb to 4-year high

Buyers currently have to accept spot market prices starting at EUR 0.60 per kg DDP Germany for brown flaxseed, the highest seen since July 2015. As market players report, the suppliers in Kazakhstan and in Russian prefer to sell to China, where buyers are prepared to pay higher rates. Market supplies are, therefore, rather limited for Western Europe and truckloads are mainly being sold. Prospects are highly encouraging for Kazakhstan as market players reckon that sowing may rise by 30%.

Production estimated at 650,000 metric tonnes in Canada

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has issued nominally revised estimates for March. The area seeded is expected to rise by 20%. Coupled with higher yields, production should climb to 650,000 metric tonnes in 2020/2021, which is an increase of 34% over last year. Although supplies are higher, the average price is expected, nevertheless, expected to rise to CAD 510/mt. Problem is that domestic demand and export volumes should range higher.
