Flaxseed: Increase in acreage in the USA and Canada

OTTAWA/LODZ. Flaxseed production has become more attractive in Canada this year meaning that acreage is set to increase. A similar picture is emerging in the US.

Rise by 65% in the US

The latest USDA report states that total acreage is set to increase by more than 65% in 2019/20, from 55,000 ha to 140,000 ha. In North Dakota alone, sowing is estimated at 117,360 ha, about 50,500 ha more than last year.

For producers in Canada, flaxseeds have again become profitable this year. Acreage will consequently rise by 15% to 400,000 ha. With average yields this year’s production should reach 615,000 mt.
