Flaxseed: improved prospects after intial delays

ASTANA. Spring rains may have delayed sowing in Kazakhstan, but tables have now turned for flaxseed. The EU relies more heavily on Russia as the import statistics for 2023/2024 show.

Crop in a good state

As reports issued by the Kazakh Grain Union (KGU) highlighted spring rains delayed sowing. Yet, the plants are in very good to excellent condition and the KGU estimates the area sown at around 900,000 ha.

According to the national statistical office Kazakhstan exported 29,300 mt of flaxseed in May, 19% more than in April. The main export destinations comprised China (12,000 mt), Belgium (8,600 mt) and Afghanistan (3,500 mt) followed by Poland (2,600 mt), Uzbekistan (800 mt) and Germany (600 mt).
