Flaxseed: GMO flaxseed detected

KIEV/BRATISLAVA. The European Commission’s rapid alert system has reported irregularities in imports from the Ukraine.

Slovakia reports GMO discovery

A delivery from Ukraine was rejected at the Slovakian border on 28 May. The seeds failed to pass tests for genetical modifications. Unfavourable weather conditions have reduced production in the Ukraine for the second year in following. At just 40,000-45,000 mt, production has declined to a 10-year low.

Demand is also subdued. According to the European Commission, shipments to the EU declined by as much as 68% to 6,612 mt in 2018. APK-Inform Agency reckons that as little as 11,000 mt will be exported in 2018/19.

The prices for organic flaxseed in feed quality currently range at 500 EUR/mt FCA Ukraine. The contract prices for golden flaxseed, 99.9% purity from the Ukraine ranfe at 761 EUR/mt CIF EMP.
