Flaxseed: Canadian Suppliers Struggling

LODZ/OTTAWA. According to Canadian market participants, the quality of flaxseed grown in 2017 has been among the best so far, yet overseas buyers have not been enthusiastic about the produce.

Canada regrets the decline in supply
The prices of Canadian flaxseed are relatively stable, with offers for raw flaxseed ranging from 0.22 to 0.24 CAD/lb or 0.31 to 0.34 CAD/kg. However, the addition of shipping costs to China and Europe results in Canadian flaxseed not being able to compete with Russian and Kazakh produce. Canadian market participants primarily bemoan that only small quantities of the 2017 harvest will be shipped abroad, despite them regarding it as very high quality.
