AYDIN. The figs do not like the relatively low night temperatures at all, and market players are already expecting losses. It remains to be seen if the weather will impede the development of the fruits.

Obscure market situation

It is still too early for production estimates, and no one wants to state prices for the new crop. Particularly in the drying phase, dried figs are still too susceptible to damage.

In this season, almost 56,000 mt of dried figs have been exported from Turkey. Exports peaked in the first three months of the season. The figure has meanwhile dropped a few hundred mt per week.

Five factors — unilateral price setting for dates, the sudden halt of international trade due to war, a sharp decline in domestic market demand, the imposition of an export ban, and a severe shortage of packaging materials on the eve of the harvest season — have placed Iran’s date industry in a worrying situation as local exporters report.
