Projections are for a total production of over 5,000,000 mt this year. Weather conditions during harvest are key for success.

Wheat: harvest started

SOFIA. Farmers in the Southeast region of the country officially opened the season in the middle of this week. According to the Agricultural Ministry, output of harvest 2017-18 will go above the 5,000,000 mt level. Last year, aggregate output was estimated at 5,660,271 mt. If the weather allows it, by the end of the month, farmers from all other regions in the country will have started harvesting the crop.

Projections for the upcoming harvest

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of last week, to-be-harvested arable lands stood at 1,100,536 ha while fallen through land was estimated at the miniscule figure of 187 ha. So far, the difference between this year’s to-be-harvested areas and those of the previous year is 30,689 ha. The average national yield of harvest 2016-17 was estimated at approximately 4,7 mt/ha. Even if the average yield in the North regions happens to be higher – as has been forecasted by farmers because of sufficient rains in some of the regions – this year’s output will still be lower.

Domestic and foreign developments

Recently, prices of harvest 2016-17 crops have been supported by domestic and foreign trades. Although buyers seem to postpone their bulk orders till the new harvest reaches closer to its end, local and international deals keep prices on the upper end. By the end of last week, remaining quantities stood close to 343,000 mt.
