Rapeseed: what to expect from the upcoming harvest?

SOFIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year to-be-harvested area of rapeseed stand at 165,280 ha, which is about 3.1% less than that of harvest 2016-17. In recent years, more and more farmers prefer to cultivate rapeseed since foreign demand for the crop is strong and prices are high. For instance, by the middle of June 2017, exports stood at 503,711 mt while domestic production amounted to 509,251 mt, with a carry-over of 70,000 mt. By that time, remaining stocks of rapeseed stood at 30,623 mt.

Because of high prices and strong foreign demand, for this season, farmers planted approximately 186,167 ha according to the Ministry of Agriculture. However, adverse weather conditions during the Winter and early Spring damaged cultivate areas, mainly in the South regions of the country, and about 20,887 ha of planted plots fell through. Expectations are for about an aggregate output of about 10% less than that of the previous year.

Prices for the upcoming crop are expected to start at about 0.332 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. However, since the crop quickly finds its routes to EU member countries and projected output will be much lower this year, farmers expect prices not to dwell so low for long.
