ANKARA/DUBAI. This year's World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress is taking place in Dubai until the end of this week. Among other things, experts present their production forecasts for the coming 2022/2023 season.

Dried fig production 2022/2023

The figures given during the congress regarding this year's dried fig production reflect the expectations of the market. A total of 149,500 mt of dried figs are expected to be produced worldwide in the coming season. In Turkey, by far the most important growing country, the outlook is good and production is estimated at 80,000 mt, which is an increase of 6.7% over last year. At the same time, Iranian production is expected to decline by 20% year-on-year to 20,000 mt. In contrast, stable to rising production figures are forecast for other producing countries such as Spain, Afghanistan, the USA and Greece.

Dried apricot production 2022/2023

With regard to dried apricot production this year, however, the published data should be viewed more critically. With 90,000 mt, Turkey's estimate is already a good 5% behind last year's result, but the reports of frost and hail damage in recent weeks suggest that production could have been significantly worse. Without taking these damages into account, global production is currently estimated at 170,300 mt, not even 2% less than last year. The coming weeks will have to show how big the difference really is. Independently, experts also speak of a production deficit in Iran and China compared to last year, while in countries like Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan a yield increase is currently expected.
