Dried figs: Speculation on aflatoxin risks

AYDIN. At about 90,000 metric tonnes, dried fig production in Turkey is about 20,000 metric tonnes larger than last year. Thanks to favourable weather conditions, there are many large fruits. This, however, could also cause problems.

Exports: plus of 2,600 metric tonnes

So far, market players have consistently praised the quality of this year's production. Now, some critical voices are coming up. They are stating that due to the size of the figs, moisture may cause problems as the associated risk of increased aflatoxin levels may rise. Previous random checks, including in EU import ports, have been inconspicuous. Since the beginning of the season, 22,545 metric tonnes of whole and processed dried figs have been exported from Turkey.
