Dried figs: shocking dependency on China

AYDIN/TEHRAN. While rumours over possible crop damages are circulating in the market, weather conditions are quite favourable in Aydin at present. Demand for dried figs from Turkey, however, ranges below expectations. Exports from Iran have, by contrast, surged by 20% in February. Yet, recent export figures show a shocking dependency on China.

Performance could be worse in Turkey

Although Turkey shipped 1,069 mt of dried figs and related products overseas last week, it should be noted that this volume ranges 7% below the 1,149 mt shipped in the same week last year. At 45,968 mt total exports for the season have slipped by a nominal 5% on last year. Considering that production has declined by more than 12% to 85,500 mt as recent International Nut and Dried Fruit Council estimates show exports are, however, not performing that bad.
