AYDIN. In a few days' time, the Turkish dried fig market will be starting the new export season. However, many suppliers are hesitating to make aggressive offers.

Good quality is hard to come by

Fig prices are far from the record price levels reached early 2018. This is, however, due to the weak Turkish lira and not to the good production volume this year. Market players report that fewer high-quality dried figs are available this year. EU quality is hard to come by. Traders have consequently raised their prices for the 2018 crop this week.

Countdown to the change of season

The official start of the export season is scheduled for the middle of next week. Nevertheless, many traders are reluctant to make their own offers for dried figs. Excepting long-term business partners, exporters are laying low and waiting for this year's harvest to be completed. Many of them are currently busy buying sufficient goods before prices rise even further. Around two thirds of the Turkish dried fig exports take place between October and December, after which the market quietens down considerably.
