TEHRAN. While farmers in the province of Mazandaran are struggling to boost dried fig production, export prices in Iran are declining noticeably.

Low dried fig production in Galoogah

In the city of Galoogah in the province of Mazandaran, which is considered the origin of the best figs in Iran, the area of fig plantations in this season is 160 ha. The estimated crop is 750 metric tonnes, of which only a small part is processed into dried figs. Although farmers have been trying for a long time to boost the dried fig industry, as higher prices can be obtained, they have had little success so far. A large part of the figs are still sold as raw commodities.

Various causes for price reductions

Export prices for dried figs from Iran have declined compared to the last two weeks. This is due to exchange rate fluctuations and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, which caused export stops. Domestic prices, however, remain stable. Dried figs, grade A currently cost EUR 3.41 per kg FOB Iran.
