QUÉBEC/MADISON. Cranberry production in the North American growing states is expected to achieve an above-average result this year. The EU has increased its imports from the USA by around 30% so far this year.

Market players remain confident

The initial results of the Canadian cranberry harvest continue to give hope for a good production result. Yields fluctuate annually, as cranberries also have an alternating productive and less productive harvest cycle. The 2024 crop falls in the more productive period, but will not be able to reproduce the record results of two years ago. Organic farmers, however, are increasingly struggling with pests again this year, which threaten to affect yields. This already contributed to the lower crop result last year. Overall, however, market players are expecting an above-average crop result, as the experts from Chelmer Foods wrote in their latest report with reference to Fruit d'Or.

In the US states of Wisconsin and Massachusetts, the flowering and pollination period went well despite the harsh winter, meaning that an above-average crop should also be achieved here. However, last year's result is unlikely to be equalled.

Market players are confident that this year's stocks will be sufficient to meet the growing demand from consumers and processors.

US shipments to the EU up by 31%

Since the beginning of this year (1 January - 28 October 2024), a total of 29,546 mt of cranberries have been imported into the EU from third countries, representing a year-on-year increase of 6.6%. While imports from the USA increased by 31.2% to 15,127 mt, imports from Chile fell by 37% to 3,143 mt in the same period. At 11,163 mt, shipments from Canada were at a similar level to last year. The main importers in the EU were the Netherlands (+11.6% to 19,580 mt), Germany (-18.8% to 2,030 mt) and Poland (-33.6% to 1,760 mt).
