Dried apricots: differing crop forecasts

Price surge for large fruits
Some companies have reportedly stopped the trade of dried apricots. Those that are still active are busy with fulfilling their current contracts. Spot purchases are hardly made any more. Nevertheless, export prices for whole dried apricots, no. 2 and no. 4 increased by USD 300-450 per metric tonne this week, after the farmgate prices for no. 4 had climbed from TRY 13-14 per kg to TRY 15 per kg this week. Apricots qualified for export become increasingly scarce towards the end of the season and, especially in the case of large dried apricots, the supply is low. This trend could continue for the time being, with traders not wanting to take large quantities with them into the new season. In such a case, single cheaper offers cannot not be ruled out.

Crop estimates are speculative
Market players continue to disagree on the production forecast for 2020/2021. For some, cool temperatures indicate lower yields, possibly even lower than those of the 2019/2020 crop, while for others the absence of significant frost and hail damage continues to point to a high-yield season. Official forecasts, however, are still lacking. Weekly exports are declining compared to last year and currently range at 1,000 metric tonnes. Overall, the export volume can hardly reach last year's volume.
