Market players voice doubts
After the earthquakes in teh Philippines sparked a surge in prices at the beginning of the year, price are slowly returning to more normal levels again. Market players are, however, doubtful of reductions in price since shipments from the Philippines are five weeks behind schedule and shipments from Indonesia are also delayed. Supplie squeezes are highly possible, meaning that prices are most likely to continue fluctuating. The market may not stabilise until May or June. Buyers are puzzled as to when the best time is to concluded contracts. At present, medium desiccated coconuts from Indonesia are trading at EUR 1,445 per metric tonne EXW Poland and from Sri Lanka at EUR 1,465 per metric tonne EXW Poland.
Reasonable prices for coconut oil
As T.M. Duché has recently reported, the corona virus is also leaving its mark on the coconut market. As trade is currently very sluggish in parts of Asia, prices have fallen for all edible oils. Coconut oil is even ranges below USD 1,000 per metric tonne becuase demand is low. Palm oil traders are also concerned, as adverse weather conditions will impact yields and only limited financial investments are available at present for cultivation.
