Dates: Iran gears up for competition

TEHRAN. Low prices have guaranteed a sharp rise in exports from Iran over the last few years. The lifting of the sanctions in 2016 most certainly boosted demand. Last year’s reinstitution of the US sanctions may, however, dampen the prospects for this year.

Exports nearly triple

The exports from Iran have nearly tripled over the last eight years with overseas shipments rising from 134,300 metric tonnes in 2011 to as much as 306,291 metric tonnes in 2018. The lifting of the sanctions in 2016 gave a noted boost to the market as Iran was enabled to offer more competitive prices. While the export volume rose by more than 20% to 209,270 metric tonnes in 2016, the export value declined by 10% to USD 208 million.
