Last year’s summer droughts cut the yield potential. Agro-meteorological conditions this summer, ceteris paribus, are what will make the difference between a strong and a weak harvest.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this season, farmers expect to harvest 412,034 ha of corn land, which is 1.9% less than what they did during the previous harvest. If weather conditions during the summer are favorable, providing the necessary level of moisture in the soil, output will be higher than that of last season. Aggregate yield from harvest 2016-17 was estimated at 5.47 mt/ha.

Corn: weather conditions (dis)favor the yield potential

SOFIA. Every year, farmers from the North regions produce the highest output. For instance, during harvest 2016-17, overall, the regions from the North produced 94.81% of total output, which stood at 2,226,094; the rest, farmers harvested from the South regions.

By the last week of June 2017, the North regions have been favored by sufficient rain while the short-term forecast is for occasional showers to occur. Such news emboldens farmers that proper moisture reserves could well be maintained within the different soil layers. Anyhow, the end of summer is not near for the sky to clear in order for the result to appear. For instance, last year, droughts affected yield potential and as a result estimated output was lowered by approximately 17%.

Domestic trade leads the market while foreign trade has been slow

Mainly, the crop has been traded on the domestic market, with the majority so far being used for animal feed. On the foreign fronts, exports have been sluggish and occasional because of regional competition.
