Longer periods of extremely high temperatures alternate with shorter periods of rains. Exports are slow on a yearly basis.

SOFIA. This season exports have been sluggish. High supply of corn from competitive countries in the Black sea region such as Ukraine influences local export volumes. Although domestic trade is active on a weekly basis, the slow exports this year will definitely leave the country with high remaining stocks before the beginning of harvest 2017-18.

Corn: sufficient rains will raise yield potential

This past Sunday, the weather carried the sentiment of Autumn. Showers fell throughout the regions of the West, filling the soil with the so necessary water reserves. The showers are expected to move East of the country in the remaining days. The weather during last week was characterized by one of the few driest periods with the highest temperatures so far in the Summer. Abundant moisture is needed for the crop to realize its fullest potential. More rains are expected in the middle of the week, although sudden hailstorms are not discounted.

Sluggish exports

On a yearly basis, exports continue to be sluggish. In addition, before the new marketing season, shipments abroad are not expected to increase significantly. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of the first week of August 2017, the country exported via Varna seaport 206,584 mt while by that time last year, marine exports via the same sea route accounted to 586,673 mt. In total, the country exported only 965,607 mt, with the majority (752,809 mt) going to EU member countries while the rest was shipped to countries from the rest of the world.
