Corn: International demand supports prices
BULGARIA. Since the beginning of the marketing season, prices have been slowly but surely drawing a steady, ascending trend. The reasons behind are strong foreign and domestic demands. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, average purchasing prices of corn rose to 0.145 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. However, a year earlier at this time, prices reached 0.154 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.
Harvest 2017-18 was a success for farmers nationwide. Auspicious weather conditions –intermittent showers falling almost every other day – till the very beginning of harvest favored farmers to collect higher yields. The higher quality characteristics of corn, together with competitive prices from early in the season, made the grain attractive as much for the local market so much for the foreign ones. On an annual basis, up-to-date total exports reached 1,048,836 mt, which is by 23.02% higher than those shipped abroad by that time last year.

Not the right moment to flirt with time
Recently, farmers have quite sped-up their planting activities since the sowing campaign of corn has been overly belated this year. They use every sunny day to be in the fields, not risking a single moment to do their husbandry activities, which for some will extend way into May before having completed their planting campaigns. Most probably, there will be some scattered fields in regions that will be left without any sowed crops. According to local authorities, by the 19th of April 2018, planted land with corn reached only 146,477 ha while a year earlier at that time, farmers had sowed 273,299 ha – a difference of 46.4% in favor of the previous sowing season.
