BULGARIA. Last year’s tough regional competition left a carry-over of 580,000 mt. However, domestic demand has been on the rise, and consumption of corn by the processing sector for the making of starch and other food products is forecasted to maintain its strong pulse till the end of the season. The livestock sector has also substantially increased the demand for corn, as a substitute of feed wheat, and the trend is expected to maintain its strong climb, as well. This year’s ending stocks are expected to hover around 250,000 mt.

Corn: In different regions, different agricultural states of affairs
Within the Northeast, some farmers already finished their sowing campaigns. Within the Northwest and central North, some farmers are in the midst of their campaigns. Annually, the greater majority of corn is collected within the North regions. In the Southwest, some farmers have already finished, others have just started while the rest have not yet started. Every farmer is well aware the main culprit that stands behind this pattern of fieldwork mosaic throughout the country is the weather!
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 26th of April 2018, farmers managed to sow 274,061 ha while a year earlier at that time, planted corn land stood at 339,581 ha. Although recently farmers entered fields at a quicker rate, the difference (19.3%) is still in favor of planted land during last year. Depending on what the weather will bring during the month of May, some farmers may reenter fields to sow again. In some regions of the country, the first showers, which are such a comfort to local farmers, have just fallen.
