Output this year is expected to rise, but while in the midst of harvest, farmers expect prices to fall. Correction in the price of local corn has been long expected. However, the correction might not be that modest, after all!

Corn: price correction is inevitable

SOFIA. Higher ending stocks before the start of the upcoming harvest come as no surprise. After all, exports have been sluggish throughout the season while prices have been stubbornly kept strong, regardless of the tough regional competition. By the 25th of August, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, remaining quantities stood at 526,628 mt. The higher ending stocks, an expected much stronger local production this season and a strong projected supply of corn in the Black sea region have already made local farmers worried about the degree of an expected price correction.

Harvest is around the corner

It is the weather that determines the start of harvest throughout the country. Some years ago at about this time of year, farmers already started harvesting the crop while during more recent ones, producers in the Northeast region began harvest during the second ten-days period of September.

Anyhow, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, during the upcoming harvest, farmers will have available for harvest 418,859 ha. So far, only 1,293 ha of total corn land have fallen through because of adverse weather conditions - hailstorms earlier in the year. The majority of “harvested” by the weather acreages are mainly isolated because of the impact of the storms and are situated in the central and eastern North regions of the country.

Prospects look quite encouraging according to farmers in the overall North regions. Yet, it is not the projected output, it is the price that worries producers.
