BULGARIA. Tough regional competition has always been a major obstacle to buoyant export activities. Depending on its persistency throughout the marketing season though, substantial quantities of carry-over inventory could build-up. As was the case during the current marketing season, the starting inventory of 580,000 mt represented a share of 25% of total output from harvest 2017-18. The prevailing tendency of the last several weeks has been for shipments abroad to EU and non-EU markets to slow down.
Corn: exports slip on a sluggish trajectory
The top importers of locally grown corn are the countries within the EU, as usually the grains are shipped to Spain, Greece, Portugal, France, among others. By the 26th of January 2018, according to local authorities, the markets of the Union absorbed 560,857 mt or 24.22% of this year’s aggregate output. By the same date, exports to non-EU markets reached 115,48 mt or close to 6% of national production. However, the pace of total exports to the world has slowed down in the past several weeks, and on a yearly basis, shipped volumes abroad lag behind by about 5%. The difference is not that huge for the number to forebode troublesome waters ahead since half of the marketing year has not yet passed.
