BONN. The German Corn Committee (DMK) has announced a considerable drop in production. Due to the drought and the difficult conditions for cultivation in many regions in Germany the farmers have harvested less corn for silage. According to data ...

… collected by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, average yields dropped to 34.27 mt/ha – a decline of 28% over last year.

Enormous differences in yields

It should, however, be noted that last year’s yields were well above average at 47.46 mt/ha. Nevertheless, this year’s yields are still more than 22% below the five-year moving average of 44.13 mt/ha. Yields vary greatly throughout Germany with Bavaria recording the highest yield of 43.88 mt/ha and Saxony the lowest at 27.78 mt/ha.

Nearly 30% decline in production

This year’s increase of acreage from 2.096 million ha in 2017 to 2.196 million ha failed to compensate for the lower yields in terms of production. Corn silage production declined from 99.473 million mt to 77.223 million mt. A similar level was last seen in 2013 (78.249 million mt).

The decline in grain maize production is similarly drastic. Average yields dropped from 10.53 mt/ha to 7.53 mt/ha. With acreage ranging at 410,900 ha production declined from 4.548 million mt in 2017 to 3.332 million mt in 2018.
