SOFIA. The dynamics on the wheat exports’ market seem to prop-up the internal consumption of corn. Strong exports so far in the season.

BULGARIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 23rd of November 2017, estimates of harvested corn land came to 95.2% while aggregate output reached 2,306,483 mt.

Corn: a sudden slowdown in exports on the background of a strong export season so far is a drop in the sea

Although sent volumes abroad slowed down during this month on a few occasions, since the beginning of the marketing season, exports have been strong. A case in point, only via Varna seaport, by the 26th of the month, 261,473 mt were shipped to foreign destinations, which on an annual basis is by close to 75% higher, according to local authorities.

Since the start of the marketing season, prices started low. The fear of local farmers to sell on a bearish trend later in the year made them unload quantities while combines were still in the fields. Such an action inevitably led the grain to be traded at subdued price levels. However, competitive prices within the region is what drives exports high, and so far in the marketing year, shipped quantities abroad have been quite strong. By the 24th of November 2017, exports to the world reached 530,075 mt while by that time last year, shipped quantities abroad reached 506,978 mt.

Domestic dynamics

The dynamics on the wheat exports’ market, which have been persistently strong, seem to turn the wave in favor of local consumption of corn since domestic demand keeps an upbeat trend on a weekly basis. Indeed, when prices of feed wheat are relatively higher than those of corn, feed mills seem to turn to the latter grain. By the end of last week, internal consumption reached 305,000 mt while at that time a year earlier, it came to 252,000 mt. Short-term market sentiments are for prices to float around current levels.
