SOFIA. Prices have been somewhat stable this week, although further retreat is expected in the short-term. The European Commission updated its tariffs on corn.

BULGARIA. On the 10th of October 2017, the European Commission updated its tariff for some cereals, among which corn, lowering its import duties from 10.95 EUR/mt to 5.61 EUR/mt. Although the update is not perceived as a substantial threat to EU corn farmers, pressure from non-EU corn importers, on the background of expected substantial global corn harvests this season, will support the bearish local price trend.

Corn: Large quantities are entered in storage facilities

By the 5th of October 2017, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, farmers harvested 75% of the 418,224 ha total available corn land. The final released estimate for collected production stands at 1,846,583 mt. Last year’s output stood at 2,226,094 mt. So far during harvest, estimated average yield on a national level stands at 5.85 mt/ha, which is by 13.4% higher than that of last year, according to local authorities.

Shipped volumes abroad increase on a weekly basis

Usually, prices of Bulgarian corn have been relatively high when compared to those of competitors within the Black sea region on the background of prices for other exported grains such as wheat and rapeseed. However, taking advantage of the recent bearish trend, local exporters are fulfilling their contractual obligations to foreign markets. By the end of last week, 175,138 mt of exported volumes were shipped to EU markets, as the remaining quantities went to the rest of the world.
