PARIS. Although the US corn market was supported by the Phase 1 agreement, imports from China still have to follow. Argentina's new government is demanding even higher tariffs on wheat, corn and soybeans. This did not raise export prices, but caused them to collapse in Argentina and Brazil, which was also linked to the Phase 1 agreement.

Corn prices slightly declined in Chicago and Paris. Nevertheless, the US market tended to remain firm after Argentina's government not only increased tariffs on wheat and corn exports from 6.7% to 12% from 1 January 2020, there are plans to raise them to 15%. This should noticeably reduce competitive pressure from Argentina and improve the competitive situation of US corn. In Argentina, export prices declined by USD 8.30 to USD 162.50 per metric tonne in anticipation of the higher duty. In Brazil, export prices also declined by USD 10.50 to USD 1
