Coffee: India's coffee exports increases

India's coffee production record:

Coffee production is expected to be 350,000 tonnes in the marketing year 2017-18 due to the increase in the area in Asia, Asia's largest coffee producer and exporter. While releasing the first forecast of the crop, the Coffee Board said that according to the estimates made before pod, the production of 350,000 tonnes of coffee will be generated in this marketing year. The production of Arabica variety is 103,000 tonnes and Robusta variety production is 247,000 tonnes. The board said, this will be a record production once again. This is 38,400 tonnes i.e. 12.31% more than the final assessment of marketing year 2016-17. He said that the main reason for the increase in production is the increase in the area of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu by about 13,500 hectares. The board said that the initial assessment will be done in May and if any damage to the crop is done then it will be included in the revised estimation.

The country's largest producer, Karnatak, had produced 221,000 tonnes of coffee last year, which is expected to increase to 251,000 tonnes this year. Compared to last year, the production of Arabica variety in the state is expected to increase from 70,510 tonnes to 75,300 tonnes and robusta variety production from 1,51,235 tonnes to 1,76,460 tonnes. Production in Kerala, which mainly produces robusta varieties, is expected to increase from 8.33%  to 68,520 tonnes from 63,265 tonnes last year. Similarly, production in Tamil Nadu is expected to be 19,160 tonnes, higher by 17.29% from 16,335 tonnes. India's coffee exports increase 9.36 tonnes

Before the marketing year 2015-16, coffee export from the country was 3,44,613 tonnes. A senior official of the Coffee Board told PTI, "In the marketing year 2016-17, coffee exports have increased for two major reasons.

1. The first reason for this is to be adequate of domestic supply to meet the export demand and record domestic production in 2015-16.

2   Apart from this, prices have also been better in the market.

The official said that for this reason, 2016-17 has been better in terms of both export volume and price of coffee. According to the board data, in the year 2016-17, coffee exports has increased by 7.31 % compared to last year.
