NEW DELHI. India and Cambodia want to strengthen their ties in trading cashew nuts. Yet, crop prospects are not exactly encouraging. Buyers need to be patient.

Mixed picture in Cambodia

Processors in India have voiced their interest in importing raw nuts and kernels from Cambodia at a meeting held in Dubai on 23 February as media reports highlight. Cambodia is the second largest raw cashew nut producer in the world after Côte D’Ivoire. Large kernels and unique flavours distinguish Cambodia’s cashew kernels from other producing countries.

However, a recent inspection conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in February has confirmed mixed results. While the crop volume will be lower than last year due to prolonged cold weather conditions, nut size and meat quality may be better than last year. Cambodia’s raw cashew nut production jumped by 27% in 2024/2025 to 850,000 mt according to Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia estimates. Exports rose by 31% over 2023 to 815,000 mt with shipments to Vietnam remaining stable at 793,453 mt.

Prices on par with last year in India

Although India is the third largest producer, the country relies on imports to cover domestic and export demand. As inventories are low in most producing countries buyers will need to be patient for volumes to emerge. Harvesting has commenced in Ghana, which is making headlines with the challenges local processors are facing in attempting to sell domestically and internationally. Arrivals from Tanzania are presently weighing on market prices in India, which are roughly on par with last year. Trading is rather subdued as buyers are preoccupied with assessing the supply situation before making long-term purchasing decisions.
