Buckwheat: production nearly slashed by half in the Urkaine

KIEV/PEKING. Decclines in production are being reported throughout Eastern Europe. The reports from China are also not exactly encouraging. In addition, the prices in Eastern Europe have shifted notably.

Extensive cut back in production

Market players report that acreage has declined to 57,000 hectares in the Ukraine this year. Production has, consequently, decreased to 70.000-75.000 metric tonnes. Last year, prodcution ranged far higher at 130,000 metric tonnes and acreage at 97,000 hectares. The situation is similarly discouraging in Lithuania. Production here has been cut from 55,000 hectares to 22,000 hectares.
