CHRUDIM. With the business for Christmas almost concluded the market players in the Czech Republic are looking forward to a few quiet weeks. And yet, it is very well possible that the farmers will go further up in price much to the detriment of the suppliers.

Highly limited supplies

Although the prices have so far remained firm on last week’s level, there are first indications that the situation will change quickly. Problem is that the farmers are becoming increasingly reluctant to sell. There hardly are any offers available. Traders reckon that prices are set to rise. No one is, however, prepared to determine how high prices will rise. The current price increase is entirely caused by the supply squeeze rather than by a surge in demand. Many buyers are in fact deterred by the high prices.
