PRAGUE. It is well-nigh impossible for interested buyers to find attractive offers. The problem is the drop in production in the Czech Republic and other origins such as Spain.

Complete sellout in Spain

Market players in the Czech Republic reckon with a 4-year low in production. Farmers estimate production at less than 21,000 mt.

About 9,000 mt of poppy is produced in Spain every year. This year the heat, however, considerably damaged the crops thereby forcing buyers, in Poland for instance, to look for other alternatives. The little supplies available in Spain have already been sold as contracts.

In countries such as Spain, China and Australia poppies are mainly cultivated to produce morphine. Poppy seeds are only produced as by-products, which is why the morphine contents tend to be very high and the seeds need to be heated to reduce these levels.

High prices

The drop in production has driven the prices to considerably higher levels in Europe. That is if offers are available. Single truck loads are, however, frequently offers for Czech blue poppy seeds with prices ranging at 1.95 EUR/kg DDP Germany.
