CHRUDIM. In two to three weeks the Czech farmers will start the blue poppy harvest and the continuing positive outlook will make the offers for spot purchases decline remarkably.

Prices approaching EUR 2,00 per kg

In the few weeks leading up to the new crop, Czech traders are increasingly willing to offer more and are ready to test the acceptance on the market with a few truckloads. Blue poppy seeds, <10 ppm morphine from the new crop are currently available for a good EUR 2.00 per kg FCA Czech Republic. However, only a few traders are willing to make long-term commitments for larger shipments for fear of speculation.

Thanks to an estimated 40,000 ha of acreage, the crop should be able reach at least 30,000 metric tonnes, even with an average yield. However, there are also voices in the market that fear that the high rainfall rate may have had a negative effect on the yield and quality of the crop. For the time being, the production prospects are good enough that farmers and traders have significantly reduced their prices for spot purchases in view of the low demand. Czech blue poppy seeds, <10 ppm morphine for prompt shipment is currently trading from EUR 2.40 per kg FCA.

Weak May exports

In recent months, Czech traders have regularly complained that Russian buyers have not called off their ordered goods. A look at this season's export figures shows that shipments to Russia increased by 87% year-on-year to 5,246 metric tonnes. However, at 269 metric tonnes, May exports were significantly down on the previous month; in April 2020, 618 metric tonnes of poppy seeds were shipped to Russia from the Czech Republic. The overall export volume in May 2020 fell by 45% to 701 metric tonnes compared to the previous month, after other important consumer countries such as Austria (-38% to 161 mt), Germany (-36% to 70 mt) and Slovakia (-62% to 42 mt) also reduced imports. Despite the recent decline in export figures, a total of 17,332 metric tonnes (+29.4%) of poppy seeds have been exported from the Czech Republic since the start of the season.
