Blue poppy seeds: growers are concerned about sowing

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. The Czech blue poppy seed market could run out of goods sooner than expected. Market players are particularly concerned about sowing. Meanwhile, Germany has more than doubled its poppy seed imports from Turkey.

Supplies are running low

With production falling again this year to 18,000 mt at best (source: Czech Statistical Office), supply in the Czech blue poppy seed market remains tight. Market players even estimate production at just 14,000-15,000 mt. In order to maximise profits, farmers are delaying the sale of raw materials for as long as possible, with some not wanting to make further sales until the new year for tax reasons.
