Blue poppy seeds: drastic price deviations for the new crop

CHRUDIM. Favourable weather conditions ensure that the Czech poppy seed crop is developing well, but a delayed start to the harvest is to be expected due to the cooler temperatures for a longer period of time.

According to reports, about 40,000 ha could be sown and only minor losses have been reported so far. Under the current conditions, a similar production result as last year can therefore be expected; in 2020, 29,000 mt of poppy seeds were harvested in the Czech Republic. 

Difference of almost EUR 0.20/kg

However, pricing in the market is difficult at the moment. Some market players report moderate demand for prompt shipments, others report above-average buying interest and low stocks. As a result, prices currently vary between EUR 1.90-1.96/kg
