Blue poppy seeds: buyers in Germany switch to Turkey

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. Last season's high prices in the Czech Republic put many buyers off. Many switched to suppliers in Turkey, where prices were far more attractive. Imports from Turkey to Germany have in fact doubled.

Exports from Turkey rise by 135%

Germany imported more than 6,600 metric tonnes of poppy seeds* from ten different countries between August 2018 and July 2019. Normally as much as 50% of all shipments come from the Czech Republic. The declines in production over the last few years have, however, prompted a notable shift in the market. Many buyers in Germany compensated for the limited supplies in the Czech Republic by switching to other countries.
