CHRUDIM. The producers are dictating the market prices by refusing to sell their supplies. To make matters worse there are hardly any offers available for the new crop. The prices have now reached a level of 1.54 EUR/kg Germany and there is no end in sight.

Until May the prices were still hovering around 1.20 EUR/kg DPP Germany. They then started to climb and gained in speed over the last few weeks. Prices have risen by as much as 17.6% to 1.54 EUR/kg within the last four weeks. This year they have so far even increased by more than 26%.

Production will drop considerably

The first crop estimates have been rather disappointing. Drought struck the plants while the seeds were forming and the damage is now becoming visible in the harvest season. Yields are as low as 400 kg/ha in the areas particularly hit the heat, whereas as 800 kg/ha are normal. Acreage has also decreased. It is highly unlikely that production will be anywhere near as big as the last three years.
