CHRUDIM. Although the Czech blue poppy market was still relatively quiet in the last few weeks, the prices now skyrocketed.

The reason for the price increase is less dramatic than the increase itself. Exchange rate fluctuations between the Euro and the Czech crown are currently causing export prices to surge to 1,225 EUR/mt DDP Germany. With a bit of luck, this trend won't last long.

Prices defy the circumstances
Whether it is frost or smaller acreages, the Czech blue poppy market withstood all of the negative reports in the last few weeks surprisingly well. In such cases, farmers and traders normally tend to raise the prices considerably, but the market remained quiet except for minimal fluctuations. This could be an indication that the farmers are actually happy with the current price level – which is probably due to the large remaining stocks and the relatively good crop predictions. Market players therefore expect that prices will remain in the same range in the next few weeks.
