Black Pepper: Vietnam exporters more active in the market

Pepper Market Update.

Vietnam:

Progressive  from January to August 31st 2017, Vietnam exported 167,496 tons pepper including 149,053 tons of black and 18,443 tons of white pepper. Total export turnover reached $ 901.39 million $. Over the same period in 2016 exports figures increased 22.28% to 30,523 tons. In September, we forecast export figures will be around 15,000 tons exported, bringing the total volume to over 182,000 tons within in the first 9 months 2017, the number of exports is equal to 12 months of 2016. So we can see clearly that Vietnam's total export volume has a new record and we will not be surprised that total exports of the 12 months of 2017 will be reaching 220-230,000 tons. After keeping the stable at the beginning of September, market dropped sharply last week in the general trend of the whole market due to weak demand. This week, pepper prices are on a stable/firmer tone because Vietnam exporters are more actively in the market for September shipment.

Cambodia:

Cambodia is currently offering raw material higher-priced than Vietnam. Like Vietnam, the current inventory is predominantly in agents and farmer with good financial conditions. Only sell small quantity when they really need.

India:

Continuously for several days in the previous week, India's pepper prices came down 10% due to cheap pepper from Sri Lanka and Vietnam, while we heard India's inventories still available good quantity. Domestic demand and exports continue to slow.

Indonesia:

Decrease slightly with black pepper and decrease sharply with white pepper due to weak demand and more raw materials available. Indonesia continues to offer in small quantities for both grades.

Brazil:

As in previous months, Brazil continues to be the most competitive. Crop is full swing this time.

Market trend is firmer/steady tones

  • Vietnam exports 9 months 2017 with the output equal to whole of the year 2016. Therefore farmers and domestic agents will continue no pressure to offer in bulk.
  • Exporters will have to enter the market to cover short position.
  • Oversea buyer will continue to place orders for demand of fourth quarter 2017.

Market weakening

  • Inventory is still abundant in Vietnam while new crop will start in December (small quantity for beginning).
  • Oversea Importers have exceeded demand because they imported huge quantity within 9 month 2017 so there is almost no demand in Q4 or just buy as limited as possible when next 3 months is new crop both India and Vietnam
  • Coffee crop has begun, as usual farmers and middleman have to sell pepper for finance as well as change the type of inventory.
