SOFIA. Weather conditions have improved in comparison with the harsh ones from last week. The majority of the grain has already been exported.

BULGARIA. In the southeast region, some rivers have widely overflown their banks, and as a result, nearby fields have been substantially overflooded. The consequences of such prolonged abundance of water will become apparent later in the following month. Yet, the recent weather worries have already eased as till the end of the month, the weather forecast is for higher temperatures throughout the country, at places even reaching as high as 22 Celsius degrees.

Barley: twilight on the export fronts

Barley is harvested first among its other locally grown crop counterparts such as wheat and rapeseed.  The country is a relatively small producer, and thus an exporter, of barley on an annual basis within the Black sea region. As a result, the grain is quickly bought out after harvest, and substantial quantities left for exports later in a marketing season are difficult to find, if not impossible.

By the 23rd of the month, according to local authorities, the country exported to EU markets 259,432 mt, which on a yearly basis is an increase of 11.67%. Major EU export destinations are Greece, Spain and Romania, among others. However, even though exports to the Union have recorded an increase, those to non-EU countries have lagged behind substantially. A case in point, by the end of last week, shipped volumes to markets outside the EU amounted to just 42,170 mt while a year earlier at that time, sent quantities abroad reached 141,485 mt or by 70.19% more. Tough regional competition within the Black sea region from behemoths such as Russia has made it more difficult for local intermediary market players to export to non-EU markets. A similar export trend is observed in the trades of other locally grown grains so far in the marketing season.
