SOFIA. Barley may not be as widely spread as wheat throughout Bulgaria. And its arable land does not increase at the same rate as other crops. But the market is in for a surprise this year.

Lower barley output
Although barley mainly grown in the northeast regions of the country, which is the most favourable land for grain products, the output has always been weaker than for wheat and corn over the last 60 years.

High output this year
However, for the current season, average barley production stood at about 48–49 kg/ha, which is only 3-4 kg/ha less than wheat. Last year’s average yield ranged at 43–44 kg/ha. Although the difference in output may not be high, the total output is enormous. Total marketable crop for 2016/17 is estimated at 727.155 mt. Currently, feed barley is trading on a level of 125.27-135.49 EUR/mt.
