The higher quality crop this year, on the background of a lower output on a yearly basis, seems too weak to support higher prices. Yet, lower prices drive exports high!

SOFIA. Barley’s harvest starts the earliest in the season. Even though harvest this year was belated because of unexpected and prolonged rains in the beginning of the season, the majority of farmers already started harvesting their fields before the hailstorms hit regions throughout the country and the damages were not high as those in the fields of wheat and rapeseed. Yet, the crop is going out of favor with local farmers, although this year’s stocks will most probably be quickly depleted because of strong export demand so early in the season.

Barley: higher quality crop on the background of lower aggregate output

When farmers planted by about 20% less arable land, on a yearly basis, to harvest for season 2017-18, it came as no surprise that output would be lower. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 4th of August 2017, national output stood at 630,015 mt. This year’s output is about 10% lower than that of last year - 697,787 mt.

In the realm of prices

According to farmers, the overall quality of the crop this year is higher and as a result, intermediary market players expect shipments to foreign countries to be much higher than those of last year. Yet, prices have remained flat for some time and short-term expectations are for prices to float around the current level. High quality crop and competitive prices are what drive exports high. More ships are line-up for mounting.
