Barley: exports are mounting

The good quality of the crop this season and relatively low prices propelled exports. Drastic price changes in short-term are not expected.

Barley: exports are high on a yearly basis

SOFIA. Who could have expected, at the start of harvest, that exports this season will pick up significantly so early in the season? Analyses of historical trends will turn out to be futile because although last year’s total exports reached close to 374,000 mt, falling by about 30% from foreign shipments during season 2015-16, by the end of July 2017, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, exports of barley reached 116,000 mt. So far in the marketing season, all exported quantities of barley went to EU member countries. Exports are already mounting on the background of only 22,000 mt of carry-over.

Furthermore, by the 30th of July 2017, shipments to foreign countries via Varna seaport amounted to 44,591 mt while at that time during the previous year, exports via the same seaport were not registered. More ships are lined-up at Varna seaport.

In the realm of prices

Although expected output will be lower this year, around 630,000 mt, market prices of executed deals remain low. Local export prices have always been lower than their counterparts from the other export-oriented countries in the Black sea basin. Ukrainian feed wheat trades at about 177 USD/mt FOB. Drastic changes in the local prices of barley during August are not expected.
