Barberries: too good to be true?

BIRJAND. While Iran exports barberries as dried fruits, research is underway to change this. A company has recently hit local news headlines by developing a method that enables barberries to be exported as organic fresh fruits.

Exporting fresh organic barberries

Trouble is that barberries quickly turn rotten without being refrigerated or frozen. Traditional harvest methods also tend to contaminate the fruits with residual toxins, heavy metals or microorganisms. The trees are, however, so well adapted to the climatic conditions prevailing in the South Khorasan Province, where they are mainly grown, that 90% do not require any chemical fertilisers or pesticides.
