MALATYA. The low prices for dried apricots have failed to attract buyers. Traders in Turkey are now also hitting the panic button in urging their customers to buy big sizes.

Subdued demand

Although supplies are abundant and the prices are low, the export rate has dropped considerably in comparison to last year. Last week’s holiday could naturally explain this decline. And yet, it is also possible that demand has dropped in general. Some buyers are in addition waiting for further price drops, although the prices have already reached their lowest in years.

Surprising prices

The prices for sulphured dried apricots < 2,000 ppm have remained stable over the last two weeks at 1,700 USD/mt (no 8) and 3,700 USD/mt (Jumbo) FOB Mersin, which is 200 USD/mt below last year’s level. The prices for dried apricots no 4 have even dropped by 750 USD/mt since last year.

The price drop for Jumbo apricots comes as a surprise since traders in Turkey claim that supplies are running low and have urged their customers to purchase Jumbos, no 1 and no 3. Some market players reckon price increases over the next few weeks. It is currently impossible to tell in how far the traders are simply pushing the panic button to generate buying or if supplies are really that low.
